Follow our journey to learn, understand, and use the elements and principles of art! We are Joy James Elementary artists and this is The JJE Art Experience. Welcome.
This year 5th Grade art students will be learning about the life, work, and influences of American pop artist, Andy Warhol!
Pop art is a genre of art in which the content is mostly defined by popular culture. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, as well as many others were influential in this art movement in the 1960s. Andy Warhol is most known for his repeated images such as Campbell's soup cans or Marilyn Monroe. These would have been very popular and common images in the 1960s. Andy felt that by repeating them like they are in everyday life, he was bridging the gap between art and everyday life.
Andy Warhol's biggest dream in life was to become famous. Due to his creativity and boldness, Warhol's dream came true. Andy Warhol was a printmaker, filmmaker, illustrator, and entrepreneur.
Most importantly, Andy Warhol was never afraid to march to the beat of his own drum!
This year we will explore the genre of pop art and take a closer look at the artwork of Andy Warhol.

-Smiling can boost your immune system by improving your overall health.
-Smiling is contagious.
-People who smile often tend to get promoted faster in their careers than their less jovial counterparts.
-Forcing yourself to smile when you are sad can help change your mood.
-Smiling is a form of exercise!
Today we wrote about things that make us smile and the emotions we express with smiles on our faces.
Well, it's fall but doesn't quite feel like it outside... That's ok!
We are UNSTOPPABLE at Joy James!
Here's a little peek into what we've been doing:
3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades have been wrapping up their posters for the Red Ribbon Week Contest.
There will be two posters selected from each classroom to be entered into the contest.
Stay tuned for the winners...
2nd Grade has begun to study the French origins of the artist, Henri Rousseau. We watched this Five Facts of France video and took an in-depth look at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Using lines and shapes, we created pictures of the Eiffel at Night.
1st grade has continued to learn about Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was from Russia, so we have dove into a study of Russian culture.
We read Rechanka's Eggs by Patricia Polacco and used our elements of line and shape to design pysanky eggs.
Kindergarten has also been exploring the French culture of the artist, Henri Matisse. We read Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans and used shapes to make twelve little girls in two straight lines.
It's been a wonderful first six weeks of JJE Art! Looking forward to many more weeks!
3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students have started working on their Red Ribbon Week posters for the district contest hosted annually by our sensational Lion's Club of River Oaks!
3rd grade students will focus on the consequences of using tobacco products.
4th grade students will focus on the consequences of abusing alcohol.
5th grade students will focus on the consequences of using illegal drugs.
For more information on substance abuse, please check out Drug Free World.
2nd, 1st grade and kindergarten students have begun digging into the art toolbox of elements.
Elements of art are what we use to make art. There are seven!
Line
Shape
Color
Texture
Value
Form
Space
Last week, we learned all about lines!
2nd grade was introduced to a French artist named Henri Rousseau!
Rousseau was fascinated by jungle scenes even though he had never visited an actual jungle. He spent a lot of time studying various plants in the local botanic garden in Paris. He used the plants he saw as inspiration for many of his jungle scenes.
Using Rousseau as inspiration, we created micro views of leaves using a variety of lines in multiple directions to create shapes of leaf texture.
We will finish those this week with oil pastels!
1st grade students read The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle and used line in multiple directions to create our very own spider webs. We will finish those this week with color!
Check out The Very Busy Spider:
Kindergarten students read Lines that Wiggle and identified different lines we see everywhere!
Using crayons, we drew a variety of lines in different colors, then used watercolor to create a wax resist.
Read Lines that Wiggle:
We are excited to start another awesome week in JJE Art.
Here's an update on the happenings within the CE Art Room:
5th Grade...
As we get closer to the end of the school year, the 5th grade artwork continues to get better and better! Look out Irma Marsh, you've got some artists headed your way next year.
We are currently working on self portraits with a little twist. We used the Age Booth app to change our pictures from 11 year olds to 80 year olds! Here's Mrs. Lamb's:
4th and 3rd Grade...
We just finished our Picasso portraits using oil pastels. The students did a wonderful job using their portrait checklist and abstract thinking. Here is an example from one of our 3rd Grade students:
2nd, 1st, and K....
We are putting the elements of art together to great complete compositions! After reading I Need My Monster on Storyline Online, we create our own monsters from our imaginations using line, shape, texture, color, value, space, and form.
